Retired Colonel Nathaniel “Nate” Todd will be the guest speaker during the Veteran’s Day Celebration scheduled for noon Thursday, November 9, at the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff. The University began a formal ceremony in 2016 to honor local veterans. UAPB was designated a 2017 Military Friendly Gold status campus and is only one of three schools in the state with that distinction.


Veteran’s Day activities will be held in the STEM building on the first floor and vendors in the lobby with booths for veteran’s benefits. An indoor picnic will follow the formal ceremony.

The speaker, Colonel Todd, is a Pine Bluff native. Prior to his retirement in October 2016, he served as Director of the Health Financial Policy Office of the United States Army’s Surgeon General in Falls Church, Virginia. Colonel Todd was recently appointed the director of the Arkansas Department of Veterans Affairs by Governor Asa Hutchinson.

Gwatney AkinsThe Pine Bluff Police Department were dispatched around 7:01 p.m. Sunday night to a shooting at the Broadmoor Arms Apartment located at 801 South Wisconsin.






A 47-year-old and a 41-year-old argued until it finally erupted into a more violent and lethal situation. 47-year-old Charles Tinnie was shot in the chest by alleged shooter 41-year-old Gwatney Akins. C. Tinnie barely made it down the stairs before collapsing and taken to Jefferson Regional Medical Center (JRMC) where he eventually died from is injuries. The alleged shooter, Gwatney Akins, was arrested on 1st Degree murder charges in connection with the murder. Police found Akins in apartment #47.

Jordan Peele’s Get Out made over $30 million in its first weekend, and the numbers are steady climbing. The hype over the movie garnered an extremely rare 100% rating on Rotten Tomatoes with over 100 reviews. Everyone seem to love the movie until, The National Review’s, Armond White didn’t see what all the hype was about. wrote on the issues that Armond had with the movie. According to,

White, a controversial reviewer who was kicked out of the New York Film Critics Circle, is known for provocative reviews and contrary opinions. He pointed to Get Out’s “‘post-racial’ ironies,” comparing it to Key and Peele’s “concocted unfunny routines deriding black paranoia and white superstition. Get Out shares that opportunistic misconception.”

“In Get Out, just as Obama did, Peele exploits racial discomfort, irresponsibly playing racial grief and racist relief off against each other, subjecting imagination and identification to political sway,” White wrote.
